Job description Located in Edmonton, Alberta, this position provides materials engineering support to the business teams at the Refinery Primary Functions: Identify degradation modes and materials parameters for use in risk assessments & RBI equipment strategy development Become familiar with site units, operation, corrosion trends and reliability Estimate a probability of failure for various degradation modes by reviewing historic inspection data, operating and service data, and industry and company guides Recommend compatible cost effective materials Help determine root causes of failures related to corrosion and materials Provide guidance for welding and heat treatment procedures Develop and optimize inspection plans (e.g. identify suspect areas and inspection techniques needed to identify) Identify equipment operating envelope requirements to minimize corrosion Manage or create corrosion control programs Responsibilities Develop mitigation plans and options to minimize corrosion (e.g. increase pipe diameter to slow velocity, resize drum to allow better separation, etc.) Review site changes and identify impacts to materials degradation and inspection Interpret and provide background on company guides or industry codes and practices related to corrosion Develop work lists for unit outages Actively engage Company materials & corrosion engineering SMEs in specific technical disciplines as required Review technical deviations to Company specifications, and ensure that the deviations are processed according to established proceduresLead RCFAs on materials related failures (5 Whys and TapRooT) Oversee failure analysis testing conducted by third party labs; review final report Support the Integrity Supervisor by communicating relevant issues that affect materials engineering design, safety, and regulatory compliance of the work Develop equipment strategy for vessels and piping circuits by identifying relevant degradations and assessing the risk Review critical process data and determine effects on equipment / piping Review erosion / corrosion rates and recommend follow-ups based on the inspection results Review current TMLs (thickness monitoring locations) and optimize locations and inspection frequency Review weld procedures and ensure they meet Code requirements and Company specification requirements Review novel materials with Materials SMEs and assess for viability Qualifications Academic Mechanical or Materials Engineering degree and professional designation (or working towards) Broad and extensive knowledge of: Materials design standards, specifications, codes, and appropriate safety criteria Oil and gas facilities design, construction, and operations Materials selection, corrosion, welding, fabrication, inspection techniques, coatings systems and non-metallics Other: 5-10 years of experience in materials engineer Strong safety mindset/culture demonstrated during all aspects of work. Strong Communications, interpersonal and issues resolution skills. Strong planning, organizational, and decision making skills. Must be able to plan work and execute against objectives in an independent manner. Good coaching, interpersonal, communication and issue resolution skills, and ability to provide work direction to contractors. Multitasking skills are essential to keep on top of issues, new requests and base program execution.
