Several hundred metres off the shore of New Brunswick’s Passamaquoddy Bay stands the 490-acre geographic novelty that is Ministers Island. Summer home in the late 1800s and early 1900s to Sir William Van Horne, iconic former President of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The island was transformed by the railroad tycoon into a small refuge of opulence, with a stunning sandstone mansion, manicured grounds, scenic roads, and hiking trails. Located adjacent to the resort Town of Saint Andrews-by-the-Sea, at low-tide visitors can drive over one kilometer of visible seafloor to reach this striking landmark. Today, the estate is undergoing significant restoration and development as a leading tourist destination in New Brunswick and is known for creating an immersive and rich experience for its visitors. Formed in 2004, the Van Horne Estate on Ministers Island Inc. (VHEMI) is a not-for-profit charitable body governed by a Board of Directors that believes in the provincial and national importance of this historical site. Through its volunteer membership base, and in partnership with the province, it is tasked with protecting, preserving, showcasing, and developing this remarkable chapter of Canadian History, as a nationally and provincially designated historic site and to telling the many stories of this special place. The VHEMI Board of Directors is now seeking a new Executive Director to lead the exciting next chapter in the island and estate’s history. Reporting to the VHEMI Board of Directors, as the Executive Director, you are accountable for the day-to-day operations and, the restoration and promotional activities of the VHEMI. You will work collaboratively with staff and volunteers in carrying out the Board’s vision and strategic direction for the VHEMI. As the ideal candidate, you are a proven leader and manager, and you bring vision, management expertise, and exceptional communication and relationship-building skills to the role. Ideally, you possess a bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related field and have experience leading within a complex, multi-stakeholder organization. You have an appreciation for the tourism industry and an interest in organizations that promote and preserve culture, heritage, or historical infrastructure and artifacts. Results-driven and comfortable working with your sleeves rolled up, you have a reputation for getting things done, a talent for identifying innovative opportunities to improve operational processes, and a proven track record of successfully contributing across all functional areas of an organization. You are skilled at representing your organization both internally and externally to build its profile and create beneficial partnerships. Your entrepreneurial spirit, business acumen, positive management style, and ability to build strong teams and lasting relationships with partner organizations and stakeholders, qualify you as the ideal candidate.
