Camp Specialist – Canoe/Water Safety Specialist for Summer Camps Reporting to the Camp Supervisor/Camp Director, the Camp Specialist is responsible for the planning and implementation of safe and varied specialized canoe programming for campers. Key Duties Plans and implements a comprehensive specialized program designed to provide progressive learning for campers Implements a safe, age appropriate, enjoyable and diversified camp program as developed in coordination with the Camp Supervisor and staff Guides and trains staff with innovative and dynamic program ideas in canoeing Provides direction and ensures involvement of Counsellors during specialty times Monitors supply inventory for area of specialty throughout the summer Ensures the safety and well-being of all campers during camp hours Interacts with program participants in a manner that reflects the HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development Leads groups of program participants Creates an environment where participants strive to participate fully, perform the best of their ability, and learn new skills Acts as a positive role model for program participants and other team members Interacts with the public on a regular basis, and promotes Town programs to customers Qualifications/Skills Minimum two (2) years’ experience working with children Knowledge and experience related to the delivery of programs and services Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard - Waterfront certification current within 2 years Minimum 1 year experience in teaching canoe skills Excellent organization, time management and planning skills Self-motivated, positive, confident and approachable Ability to work with minimal supervision Strong oral and written communication skills Current Standard First Aid with CPR C (If hired, must be obtained by June 26, 2023) HIGH FIVE - Principles of Healthy Child Development (If hired, must be obtained by June 26, 2023) Ability to provide a current (within six months) Criminal Reference/Vulnerable Sector Check upon being hired Nice to Have Currently enrolled in or completed relevant post-secondary education (university/college) in Outdoor Recreation an asset ORCKA Certification preferred What is Offered to Staff Rate of Pay: $15.84- $16.37 per hour Hours of Work: Monday to Friday – various 8-hour shifts between 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (paid lunch) Town Perks: The Town offers part-time staff access to a Health & Wellness Program and Town of Ajax Fitness Centre membership at a 50% discount Key Dates for Summer Camps Formal Interviews – The week of January 16-20, 2023 Active Interview – January 21, 2023 Staff Orientation – May 29, 2023 or May 31, 2023 Summer Staff Training - June 17, June 26-29, 2023 Camps / Playgrounds begin - July 4, 2023 Camps / Playgrounds end - August 25, 2023* Contracts may be extended to end on September 1, 2023 for Camp Finale BMST Training Dates for Summer Camps Behaviour Management Systems Training – May 24, 2023, June 19, 2023, or June 21, 2023 A second Interview Workshop will be held the week of April 17-22nd, 2023 for any vacant positions How to Apply This position is being advertised concurrently to internal and external candidates and applications are accepted online.
